Re: SUPPORT Climate Action and Green Jobs Bill (HB 2815/SB 6516)

Dear Governor Gregoire and Members of the Washington State Legislature:

We write this letter asking you to support HB 2815 and SB 6516, known as the Climate Action and Green Jobs Bill. As members and supporters of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), we urge you to pass this Bill for the benefit of Washington state’s economy and environment. We believe this legislation is critical to secure a leadership position for the Pacific Northwest regional clean tech sector, and will play a key role in the creation of “green collar” jobs.

E2 comprises more than 850 business leaders from across the nation who support good environmental laws that make sound economic sense. Our members come from 25 states and work in technology, consulting, venture capital, financial services, legal, professional and a number of other sectors. These members have been involved in financing, creating or working in the early development of over 800 companies, which have created more than 400,000 jobs nationwide. Our members currently represent more than $20 billion in private equity capital.

We believe the Climate Action and Green Jobs Bill presents a new model for addressing the world’s need for clean technology, positioning Washington and the Pacific Northwest region as a hub of sustainable industries while creating new jobs and training the specialized workforce to fill those jobs.

Clean technology has the potential to be a major economic driver for the State of Washington. New research by our organization and the Cleantech Venture Network shows dramatic acceleration in growth in the clean tech sector. Our own analysis found that every $100 million dollars in clean tech venture investment generates an average of 2,700 new jobs. We estimate additional U.S. clean tech investment by 2010 will result in 400,000 - 500,000 new jobs nationally.

The Climate Action and Green Jobs bill positions Washington to capture significant benefits to the state in economic growth and job generation in the clean tech sector. We urge you to support HB 2815 and SB 6516, the Climate Action and Green Jobs Bill.

Sincerely,

Kevin Banister
