Business Voice for the Environment

May 19, 2009

Dear President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Reid and Members of the U.S. Senate,

As members of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), a national organization of 850 prominent business leaders, we are committed to job creation, our national security, and American leadership in the global marketplace. Domestic renewable energy and efficiency technologies will be the foundation of our global competitive strategy in the coming decades, providing U.S. businesses with energy security and creating a new class of American technologies and manufactured goods for domestic deployment and for export. We urge you to work on passing comprehensive energy and climate legislation this year that delivers these new clean energy solutions to safeguard and grow our economy and put Americans back to work.

E2’s national community of business leaders from a wide variety of industries believe in protecting the environment while building economic prosperity. As a group of individual entrepreneurs, investors and professionals, we collectively manage over $20 billion of venture capital and private equity and have started well over 1200 businesses that in turn have created over 400,000 jobs.

Whether directly involved in the clean energy industry or in other industry areas, E2 members support a comprehensive carbon and clean energy policy as an economic growth strategy that will drive $300 billion of investments toward domestic clean energy industries over the next two decades, creating hundreds of thousands of American jobs in the process (Natural Resources Defense Council, “A Clean Energy Bargain.” December 2009). The expanding international market for energy represents a multi-trillion dollar opportunity: U.S. manufacturers can be the leading global suppliers of cleaner cars, cleaner fuels, and cleaner power, and technologies that improve industrial, power plant and building efficiency. But U.S. businesses and investors await the clear market signal that only a price on carbon will provide to define the rules for 21st century commerce. Every day we wait, the United States falls further behind other nations that are investing more aggressively in their clean technology futures.

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is the most recent evidence of the enormous costs placed on the American economy, borne by businesses and individual taxpayers alike, due to our outdated systems for energy generation, delivery and use. Our current energy scenario, highly unstable in both price and supply, is creating a dangerous drag on our economy.  If we face this challenge head on, we will unleash the powerful engine of American innovation, create millions of new jobs, and achieve the energy and national security upon which our future as a country depends.

Your engagement in this effort is critical. It is time to put politics behind us and pass bi-partisan comprehensive energy and carbon legislation now.
