Business Voice for the Environment
Good for the Economy.
Good for the Environment.

December 7, 2015

Dear Member of Congress,

As members of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), we are writing to seek your support for strong U.S. action on climate change at the upcoming COP 21 climate summit in Paris, and urge you not to support legislative efforts aimed at derailing U.S. leadership at the international climate talks.
E2 is a national, nonpartisan group of business leaders, investors, and professionals from every sector of the economy who advocate for smart policies that are good for the economy and good for the environment. Our members have founded or funded more than 2,500 companies, created more than 600,000 jobs, and manage more than $100 billion in venture and private equity capital.
As businesspeople, we are concerned that our country faces hundreds of billions of dollars in economic losses related to climate change if we do not take action now. These costs include as much as $180 billion from water resource issues like flooding and drought; $110 billion annually in lost labor due to extreme temperatures and tens of billions more in damage to coastal properties and bridges, roads, drainage systems and other crucial infrastructure.
Climate change is a global issue that requires a global response.  The United States must lead - not follow - other countries in taking action to address these threats to our economy and our environment.
We ask that you vote against any resolution designed to derail, destroy or delay international agreements to reduce global carbon emissions.  Voting for such resolutions or taking other actions intended to nullify or weaken  U.S. climate pledges would send the wrong signal to the international community.  More than 150 nations accounting for 89 percent of global climate emissions have submitted pledges to make significant emissions reductions to address climate change in the lead-up to the Paris talks.
Opposing an international agreement would also send the wrong signal to the burgeoning clean energy industry here in the United States, which has announced more than 250,000 jobs in the past three years alone, according to E2 estimates.
And it would send the wrong signal to the hundreds of thousands of hard-working Americans who now make a living in clean energy in every state in the country.
In Paris, the United States has the opportunity – and the duty – to lead the global response to climate change.
To support the future growth of the US economy we ask that you aid in the COP21 process, not seek to derail it.
