Spotlight on Innovation and Policy: Farming for the Future (New York City) EcoSalon

Tuesday, March 28, 2017 (6:30 PM - 8:30 PM Eastern)
What will it take to feed New York City in 2050? Farming every square foot of rooftop space would provide enough calories to feed only 2% of the city’s population. What other options could provide sufficient local, sustainably sourced food? What if those options could also reduce carbon emissions? AeroFarms, a Newark-based, high tech agriculture company, thinks it has a solution: Go vertical.  Use air.  Mine data.

Join David Rosenberg, CEO and Co-Founder of AeroFarms, to learn how its indoor, vertical farms run by clean technology grow flavorful healthy food in a socially responsible manner. It’s a model that can be replicated around the country and the world. But technology alone is not enough. Jennifer Grossman, Founder and President of Farm Co New York and lead of the Regional Food Program at NRDC, will engage in a discussion about how markets and policy can come together to support dramatic growth of sustainable urban agriculture.  Contact ying@e2.org with questions.

He is joined by leading urban studies theorist, Richard Florida.

As the 21st century progresses, metropolitan regions will increasingly be affected by a series of global megatrends: climate change with attendant droughts and heat waves, income inequality, educational and health disparities, aging, housing insecurity, migrations, and many more. All of these will be accompanied by a heightened sense of volatility and uncertainty. And the financial volatility of the interconnected global economy will only make many regions more vulnerable. But there are five characteristics that cities and metropolitan regions can develop to not only help prepare for these megatrends, but to thrive. Join Jonathan Rose as he shares these five characteristics outlined in his new book,The Well-Tempered City, and discusses creating a higher purpose for cities.
