Oceans and Global Warming
The Massachusetts Senate Committee on Global Warming & Climate Change invited E2 to testify at their August 2nd hearing on the topic of "The State of Our Oceans,” as it relates to global climate change. E2 member Dr. Rob Moir, Director of the Ocean River Institute and Chairman of the Board of Ocean Champions, represented E2. He described the early signs that global warming is already upsetting the Northeast marine ecosystem based on four climate related assaults: acidification, an increase in water temperature, a decrease in oxygen content and a frightening lack of predictability for marine ecosystems.
Rob went on to point out the economic impact of these dangerous changes given the importance of the state and regional seafood industry, where the annual Massachusetts commercial landings of fish and shellfish in 2005 was valued at over $425 million, and the commercial seafood industry supported more than 76,500 jobs in the Northeast in 2004.
E2 New England is actively supporting state legislative measures that address global warming and will be mounting a campaign in support of the Massachusetts Ocean Act. This bill, which passed in the State Senate last year, calls for balanced, ecosystems-based management of our state’s oceans through creation of a comprehensive ocean management plan.
